A Workshop with Avira Beta Community Members

We were excited to welcome in Tettnang Beta testers from USA, Italy, Germany, Greece, China & Malaysia.

The members we invited to this workshop are the most active beta testers in our Antivirus for Windows Beta project and they were chosen based on the quality of their feedback and the number of forum posts or bug reports they provided.

Although they contribute to the Avira Beta Community out of their own interest, most of them are also our customers, making the information exchange even more interesting.

What happened during the 2 days?

We offered the participants a detailed tour of the Avira Protection Lab, giving them the opportunity to meet the people behind our products. In order to provide them with a technical overview as well, our experts showed them how we are visualizing the digital threats in real time. They even had the chance to hear everything about our vision as company directly from our CEO, Travis Witteveen, and meet the company founder, Tjark Auerbach.

Throughout the workshop, most of the discussions were carried around the Avira products, the current threat landscape, but we also focused on global privacy and security topics.

We collected feedback from our guests and placed them under several categories of which Features, Usability, Product ideas and also Problems resolution were the most discussed ones.

While we were happy to discover that all participants agreed that the anti-malware technology used by Avira is one of the best in the world, they seem to think we still have some work to do to improve the product usability.

ConsiderinGarden Party Photog the number of photos shared on social media, our guests seem to have enjoyed the Avira experience. As for us, we have our To Do list before the next Beta Testing Community Workshop we are looking forward to organize next year.

Infomatrix 2015: they’ve got skills!

InfoMatrix took place in Bucharest, Romania and it was organized by Lumina Educational Institutions, the Ministry of National Education and ISMB to encourage young people to apply their imagination, their passion, and their creativity to technology innovations that can make a difference in the world today.

For this year’s edition, 4651 students and teachers representing 461 schools from 63 different countries submitted a total of 1899 projects.

Avira was excited to also delegate a jury member for the competition. Alexandru Mihai, Web Backend Software Engineer in the Cloud Services & Infrastructure Department contributed to choosing the best project in the Programming section of InfoMatrix.

InfoMatrix 2015 : The Best Projects

  • Visionbot: Alexandru Ionut Budişteanu obtained the gold medal for the ‘VisionBot Pick and Place machine’ project. Visionbot is a robotic machine able to automatically create electronic products by introducing surface-mount devices (SMD) as capacitors, resistors, and integrated circuits on printed circuit boards (PCB). This machine should allow engineers and even SMBs to transform their prototypes into industrial products (electronics, computers, consumer electronics).
  • R-Walker: Victor Ricardo and Matias Garcia from Mexico also won a gold medal with the R-Walker project: a prototype of alternative energy and urban mobility consisting of three electrical systems, mechanical and hydraulic ensuring safety, comfort and speed of use. This personal scooter is not only cheap but since its main source of energy is obtained through alternative methods it can be a decisive help in reducing pollution.
  • Usertik: Haris Başici and Nedim Şişici from Bosnia received the first prize at the Programming section with an ingenious solution that allows automated delivery and integration of high quality web services. More details about the project are available on their official website.
  • Noriy.NET: Roşca Codreanu-Ionescu Alexandru, representing Romania, created a cloud service for parental control. His goal was for parents to ensure safe Internet browsing on their children’s devices as well as help them benefit from a system of notifications for potentially dangerous activities.
  • Low poly dreams: you can check out for yourself the cool 3D video animation that helped Juanro Cobian from Mexico to win the 1st place in the “Computerized Graphics” section.

We’re already looking forward to the 2016 edition of this wonderful event that brings together so many talented students from all around the world.

Reporting from AVAR 2014

Kicking off proceedings was Dr. Andrew Clark from CERT Australia (the Australian Government’s Computer Emergency Response Team) who highlighted the many challenges in cyber crime that the Asia Pacific region faces, and how collaboration with neighbouring countries is helping those efforts.

Industry veteran Graham Cluley reminisced on his more than 20 year career with tales of some of the first viruses and malware, many of which now seem so harmless compared to today’s standards.  He also included an amusing rendition of what he calls the “Anti Virus Industry Song”.

“Why can’t we have a virus called ‘Lumpy Trousers’?”, quipped Graham Cluley at one point in the conference, but there was no shortage of interestingly named threats during the conference – such as Dragonfly, Citadel, and even Chuck Norris.

The topic of the Internet of Things inevitably emerged, including discussion of vulnerabilities affecting hundreds of thousands of Internet router and gateway devices used by homes and businesses globally.  Hardware manufacturers were reminded once again not to build devices with backdoors, and to implement better security by design.

As the two day event concluded, a number of industry veterans took to the stage with their musical instruments to rock into the night, entertaining delegates and proving just how collaborative and supportive the Anti-Virus industry is as we all do our best to protect the world from the scourge of malware and online threats.
