How SMBs in the UK Handle their Company’s Security

UK Avast for Business INFOGRAPHICIn February, Avast launched the world’s first free, easy to use, cloud-managed security offering, Avast for Business, protecting SMBs from viruses and cyberattacks. We conducted a survey amongst our Avast for Business users in the UK to gain further insight into how local SMBs handle their security.

Nearly three-quarters (73%) of respondents said that 100% of their company’s employees use the Internet. Businesses, whether small or large, retail or non-profit, often have a database of valuable customer data, making them an attractive target for cybercriminals.

Cybercrooks use social engineering to attack businesses, tricking employees via phishing scam to, for example, gain access to a company’s network. Despite the high number of data breaches, 57% of SMBs in the UK invest only 0-2% – little to nothing – of their IT budget on security.

Who handles IT support services for SMBs in the UK?

  • 1 out of 10 said an employee (not a designated IT admin) handles the company’s IT support services
  • Nearly 50% have an in-house technician
  • 1 out of 10 have an external supplier/technician handles the company’s IT support services
  • 28% of SMB business owners handle their company’s IT

BYOD

More than half of SMBs in the UK allow their employees to access company data from their personal devices. Bring your own device (BYOD) is a convenient practice SMBs have embraced, as it saves costs and encourages productivity.

However, BYOD can be risky, if not handled properly. Not only can hackers target the device to gain access to sensitive corporate information, but if the device is lost or stolen, the company data stored on it goes with the device. More than half (52%) of SMBs authorize employees to access corporate data on personal devices, yet the majority (54%) doesn’t run a BYOD scheme.

Threats

Losing valuable and confidential data (31%) is the greatest security risk to UK SMBs along with productivity (23%) and losing customers (16%). We asked our business users if a virus or threat had infected them before switching to Avast for Business. When it came down to it, threats and hacks cost six out of 10 businesses productivity, followed by data loss (19%).

Types of security solutions SMBs used prior to switching to Avast for Business:

  • More than half (55%) used free consumer security solutions
  • 23% used premium business security solutions
  • Nearly one out of ten used premium consumer security solutions
  • Nearly one out of ten either do not know what kind of security solution they used before switching to Avast for Business or did not use any security solution (3%)

If your SMB has a low IT budget or if your business is currently using a consumer security solution, make sure you check out Avast for Business. Avast for Business is FREE and can be downloaded here.

Nonprofit organization upgrades hardware with savings from Avast

NeighborImpact logo

NeighborImpact uses free Avast for Business to manage computers in multiple locations.

Nonprofit organizations operate on extremely tight budgets. Michael Hensley, Information and Facilities Officer at NeighborImpact doesn’t let that stand in the way of his organization’s mission. The Avast team recently spoke with Hensley about his work and how Avast for Business has helped him.

“We are a non-profit human-services agency serving 3 counties in central Oregon.” Hensley said, “Our staff is not very tech-savvy and we’ve had significant issues with that. We needed something simpler.”

Hensley recently switched NeighborImpact to Avast for Business security software and explained what made him choose the new cloud-based solution.

“The fact that it’s cloud-based is the primary feature that we needed. We have offices and classrooms distributed throughout the area. We are able to monitor all of our computers from the web-console which has shown consistent improvement.” Hensley went on to say that “viewing all of our devices from one place is really convenient.”

Hensley said that his nonprofit used to use Bitdefender but switched because it was too expensive.

“I was somewhat familiar with Avast. I knew it was a reputable company that had been around for a while. When I discovered Avast for Business and weighed the options it was the natural choice. It’s simple, cloud-based, and free.”

NeighborImpact was able to save enough of their precious budget by switching to Avast for Business to make a big impact on NeighborImpact’s server upgrade.

“The savings on software were extremely helpful in budgeting for our hardware upgrade. The extra money allowed us to get hardware in a different category than we otherwise would have been able to afford.”

How one IT guy gained control of 500 devices with Avast for Business

The rule of thumb for managing devices is one IT Administrator for every 100 computers or devices. Five hundred is difficult to manage for an entire IT department, let alone one IT Administrator. But, Gary Myers is up to the task.

The Avast team caught up with Myers recently to see what he thinks about the new Avast for Business product. “They say you should have one person for every 100 devices so it’s definitely a challenge.”

Gary explained how he chose new Avast for Business as his security solution. “I’ve been using Avast for a long, long time, so when I saw that there was a new business product, I knew I should give it a try.” Myers says that Avast is a step above the rest and he switched to Avast for Business because he wanted the new features of the cloud-based product.

Avast for Business web console

Our easy-to-use Web console lets you see and manage devices, reports, and alerts from anywhere.

Myers said the upside of the new cloud-managed antivirus is obvious. “I’m seeing advantages with the software being cloud-based. The web-console allows me to see everything I need to see at once and everything is up-to-date.”

Streamed updates and the cloud-managed console certainly make life easier for an IT administrator that manages as many devices as Myers.

Budget is often a huge factor when IT professionals purchase antivirus software but for Myers, the free product “works, and it’s low overhead.”

Avast for Business is completely free forever – which makes it the ultimate cost-cutting, money saver.

Ohio school district teams up with Avast for Business

Avast teamed up with Chillicothe City School District in Ohio to provide free antivirus software their schools.

The best defense is a good offense.

The best defense is a good offense.

Educational institutions manage sensitive data including names, birthdays, and even social security numbers. That data needs to be secured to ensure sensitive student data remains confidential. Tyler Hisel is an IT technician the Chillicothe City School District in Ohio. Tyler recently started protecting his school with Avast for Business. “We had AVG before switching to Avast and we really needed to simplify our security solution.”

Servicing an entire school district’s IT needs is a challenge. That’s why Tyler said he needed software with easy-to-use centralized management where he could monitor the district’s devices. “Avast was cost saving and had lots of features that I was surprised came free,” said Tyler.

Tyler discovered Avast for Business by searching for free antivirus software for business. He explored all of the options and after considering the alternatives decided that Avast for Business was the best antivirus software for the district. “All we wanted was a simple security solution that worked, and I knew we didn’t have to pay a fortune for it.”

Budget wasn’t the biggest factor in Tyler’s decision but he claimed that it was definitely important. There were other security solutions that fit most of Tyler’s qualifications but he says that Avast for Business’ nonexistent price tag and centralized management made it the clear choice. When asked if he would recommend Avast to others he replied saying, “We’ve told businesses in the area about it already!”

Tyler’s final thoughts on Avast for Business were simply this, “I’ve got to hand it to you, it’s really an impressive product and it being free just makes it better.”

Avast for Business is free for schools, small and medium sized businesses and non-profit organizations. Visit our Avast for Business website to learn more and sign up.

Arizona school simplifies and saves with Avast’s free business software

Avast for Business just made life easier and saved money for administrator Dale Kvittem-Barr at Peace Lutheran Church and School.

Avast for Business protects a private school for free

Avast for Business simplified a private school’s security management – for Free!

Schools house a large quantity of sensitive data and Kvittem-Barr knows that security software is a must. But, managing 50 devices is a challenge.

“When I started here, we had Norton and each computer had its own individual license. It was a nightmare. I switched all of the school’s computers to the free Avast consumer product. When I heard there was a free business solution and that it had a centralized management dashboard I knew we had to have it.”

With Avast for Business, Kvittem-Barr no longer has multiple licenses to manage and he can see his entire network anytime, anywhere.

“The cloud-based system makes sense because the entire network can be updated constantly from the dashboard so I don’t have to run around to every computer anymore.”

For his mixed platform networks, Kvittem-Barr says Avast for Business just works for him.

“We have Macs and PCs so to be able to protect them both with the same console is great!”

And the software keeps him continuously informed about threats to the school.

“The notifications have been really helpful because I can see which computers are being hit harder than others and make sure I focus on those.”

Budget is an issue for all schools and Kvittem-Barr said that his school’s savings with Avast for Business were substantial. As for plans to spend the savings he says,

“Yeah, we were actually able to purchase a lot more computers and a device charging cart.”

CryptoWall joins forces with click fraud botnet to infect individuals and businesses alike

Newest CryptoWall variant enters systems through a click fraud botnet.

Newest CryptoWall variant enters systems through a click fraud botnet.

Earlier this year, we told you about the return of CryptoWall, malware that encrypts certain files in your computer and, once activated, demands a fine around $500 as a ransom to provide the decryption key. These kinds of financial fraud schemes target both individuals and businesses, are usually very successful and have a significant impact on victims. The problem begins when the victim clicks on an infected advertisement, email, or attachment, or visits an infected website.

Recently, a click fraud botnet with ties to CryptoWall has been discovered. The malware, nicknamed ‘RuthlessTreeMafia‘, has been being used to distribute CryptoWall ransomware. What first appears as an attempt to redirect user traffic to a search engine quickly mutates into an alarming threat as infected systems begin to download CryptoWall and system files and data become encrypted, rendering them useless by their owners. Click fraud and ransomware are two types of crimeware that are usually quite different from one another and typically don’t have many opportunities to join forces; therefore, the result of this unlikely yet powerful collaboration can be detrimental to its victims.

In a public service announcement issued on June 23, the FBI warns of the continued spread of this variant of CryptoWall that has the potential to affect not only individuals, but also government entities and businesses. The report reads:

“Many victims incur additional costs associated with network mitigation, network countermeasures, loss of productivity, legal fees, IT services, and/or the purchase of credit monitoring services for employees or customers. Between April 2014 and June 2015, the IC3 received 992 CryptoWall-related complaints, with victims reporting losses totaling over $18 million.”

The uncovering of this most recent CryptoWall variant also goes to show just how creative cybercriminals can be when coming up with ways to get their malware onto people’s systems. A simple click fraud botnet compromise can now lead to a potentially serious ransom attack.

How to stay safe against infection

  • Go with your gut. Don’t click on any emails or attachments that appear as suspicious or unfamiliar to you.
  • Enable popup blockers. Popups are a popular way for hackers to spread malware. To eliminate the chance of accidentally clicking on a popup, it’s best to prevent them from appearing in the first place.
  • Educate employees about the dangers of malware. It’s crucial that SMBs teach their employees about the risks that malware pose to their business. Hold regular workshops to educate employees about common malware attacks, such as phishing emails, and how they can stay safe against them.
  • Always use antivirus software and a firewall. It’s crucial that you download and use antivirus software to best protect yourself against malicious attacks. For the highest level of protection, regularly make sure that your software is updated to the latest version.

BYOD increases the need for Anti-Theft protection

smartphone and tablet

The convenience of BYOD can go down the drain if the employee loses their device. Protect it with Avast Anti-Theft.

Small business owners embrace the idea of employees supplying their own computers, smartphones, and tablets in the workplace. But the savings and convenience can go down the drain if the employee falls prey to a phishing scam and downloads malware or loses their device. Protecting mobile devices has become increasingly more important as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) grows in popularity.

Technical security measures to protect information are of obvious importance. However, many security incidents relate to the theft or loss of equipment.

We can write multiple blog posts about BYOD policies and educating your employees about the latest threats and tricks that cybercrooks play (spearphishing, for example), which is all extremely important, but if you simply lose your device, then all bets are off anyway. You can avoid headaches in the case of misplaced or stolen devices by having a way to remotely locate the missing device and wiping the data away if it ends up in the wrong hands.

Avast Anti-Theft allows users to log on to their desktop account or use a friend’s phone to remotely locate their device, lock it, activate the remote siren, or wipe its data clean.

Learn 5 ways to thwart the thief who stole your Android.

Business owners also need to consider what to do about company data on an employee’s personal device when they are terminated or leave the company. Some companies have resorted to wiping personal devices clean of all data, but that includes contacts, family photos, apps and music, which can lead to unpleasant lawsuits or complaints from former employees. Mobile device management systems (MDMs) are available, but could be overkill for very small businesses.

If you only have a few employees, and do not require a full-blown MDM, then Install Avast Anti-Theft for free from the Google Play store to protect your own devices and those of your employees.

Your SMB’s Biggest Security Threat Could be Sitting in Your Office

This article is a re-print from the April 1, 2015 edition of Silicon India.

Educate your employees about data security.

Careless employees, not hackers, are the biggest threat to your company’s data security.

Security threats are evolving quickly, making it difficult to pinpoint just one threat that is currently affecting small and mid-size businesses.

From the threats we have observed in the past and the ones we anticipate for the future, we have learned that while malware can be damaging to businesses, so can human decisions. This makes it vital for small and mid-size business owners to discuss possible threats with their employees and share basic IT guidelines with them, but more importantly, to implement a strong security solution that holds up dangers before they become a real threat.

Taking Advantage of Human Nature: Social Engineering

Hackers understand that it is human nature to make mistakes, which is why they often turn to social engineering. Social engineering is a tactic that tricks people into revealing their personal information, like log in details, or into performing actions, like downloading malware disguised as an attachment or link.

Phishing emails are a popular form of social engineering that can easily sneak their way into your employees’ inboxes, disguising themselves as yet another offer, promotion, or even customer, if you do not have anti-phishing protection. Phishing campaigns come in many forms; they can either use scare tactics to make people believe they are in trouble or that they have won a prize.

In the last few months we have seen Trojans like Pony Stealer and Tinba make their rounds. Both Pony Stealer and Tinba attempted to convince people they owed money and to download an invoice, which was of course not an actual invoice, but a Trojan.

Falling for phishing scams can have devastating effects on businesses; they could not only steal personal information, but also attack Point of Sale (PoS) systems to steal customers’ financial information, thus not only affecting the business itself, but its clients as well.

Lack of security awareness: Beneficial for hackers, bad for your business

Not taking proper security precautions, like choosing weak passwords or ignoring security updates, is another human flaw cybercriminals like to abuse to access accounts and networks. To gain control of a system, hackers can enter common or weak passwords or simply look up hardware’s default administrative log in credentials.

Neglecting to update software is another gateway for hackers, leaving vulnerabilities and loopholes wide open for them to take advantage of. Similarly, connecting to public and open Wi-Fi connections while on a business trip is like sending hackers a personal invitation to snoop around your business.

India’s SMBs are getting technology ready – hackers are getting ready, too

According to Indian consulting firm, Zinnov, 20% of India’s 50 million small and mid-size businesses are technology ready. Cybercriminals will take note of this and are probably preparing plans at this very moment, which is exactly what you should do, too.

Set up basic security guidelines for your employees, teach them about possible threats and make sure they understand how imperative their role plays in securing your business. For example, your employees should be encouraged to choose strong passwords for their devices and accounts, to keep their software updated – if that’s not what you manage centrally – and to use a VPN when connecting to unsecure wireless networks.

You cannot, of course, rely solely on your employees to protect your business – humans innately make mistakes. To protect your business and to provide your employees with a safety net, you need to have a proper business security solution. Small to mid-size businesses should look for security solutions that include anti-phishing, firewall to control network traffic, and server-side protection. If employees are required to travel frequently, it also makes sense to implement a VPN solution on their laptop, smartphone, and tablet. If connecting to open Wi-Fi at an airport, hotel or café, a VPN can be used to encrypt valuable business data and protect it from hackers.

As humans do make mistakes, you cannot rely on your employees to implement and manage the security solution themselves. It is recommendable to choose a solution that empowers you to remotely manage the security on your employees’ computers.

Whether your business is a two-man show, or an army of 2,000, awareness, paired with the right security technology are essential.
