How great is the risk of infection on an Android smartphone?

The risk of your Android smartphone becoming infected depends on several factors. In the US and Europe most people use official stores such as Google Play for installing apps. The risk is much lower than in many Asian countries, especially China, where app stores are not subject to stricter controls. Because of these unofficial app stores, along with numerous rooted phones, the chance of installing a dangerous app is highly increased.

In Asia, the smartphone is often used as an alternative to the PC. People frequently use it for online banking which make them vulnerable to Zeus Trojan malware. Zeus is commonly delivered via a link or an attachment in a phishing message or through a text message via WhatsApp, SMS, or Twitter. This threat will similarly increase in Europe and the US as banking apps get more popular.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

The Avast Virus Lab has more than one million samples of mobile malware in its database, and reports that 2,850 new mobile threats are created every day by hackers. The threat situation can change quickly and dramatically so it is best to use preventative protection and install security software on your smartphone. At this point though, protecting important data in the event that your phone is lost or stolen is more critical than malware protection.

The AV-Comparatives survey says that Android users in North America protect their phones more than anywhere else in the world with 31 percent of respondents reporting they have protection. South America, Asia, and Europe are much lower at 17 percent.

AVG AntiVirus Wins Top Rated Security Product 2014

“Does exactly what it says on the tin” was an advertising slogan that appeared in the UK in the 90s. It resonated well with consumers due to its simplicity. Today, it’s a common term referring to something that is straightforward and does the job.

I am reminded of this phrase when I read the recent independent test results for the AVG AntiVirus products. The results show that AVG products are delivering our promise to protect our users from malware. Lets take a moment to review the recent results…

Virus Bulletin (VB) tested 39 Anti-malware solutions running on Windows 7 Professional and AVG AntiVirus received the top RAP result with 91.6%. The test measures a products detection rates on the newest samples available as well as an unknown sample to see how quickly and accurately they detect it. Click here to see the full test results.

But it’s not just about An important part of providing the best protection is that the detection engine doesn’t slow down the performance of the machine. VB tested the performance impact slowdown vs detection and there was nothing to worry about here either, as you can see here.

Detecting malware is of course extremely important but its also critical that malware is removed once detected and AV-Comparatives conducts a test that measures the quality of removal and AVG AntiVirus achieved ‘Gold’ status in this test along with ‘Top Rated Security Product 2014’.

Avast! Mobile Security gets award from AV Comparatives

Most people would not dream of neglecting the security of their PCs or laptop, but those same folks forget that the device in their pocket is just as powerful, if not more so. You’ve heard it before –your expensive smartphone, which stores personal data, private photos, Internet banking information and even company data, is an attractive target for cybercrooks and thieves.

AV Comparatives, an independent organization which tests antivirus products and mobile security solutions, released new testing results and gave avast! Mobile Security the highest “Approved Award” for Android security products.

Malware protection

Mobile phones attacks are getting more and more sophisticated, and it is growing exponentially. “We now have more than 1 million malicious samples in our database, up from 100,000 in 2011,” said Avast’s CCO, Ondřej Vlček. “Mobile threats are increasing – we expect them to reach the same magnitude as PC malware by 2018.”

In addition to the malware and anti-theft protection, AV Comparatives liked the standalone avast! Mobile Backup which enables personal data to be backed up to Google Drive.

The Backup, App Locker and Privacy Scan features, which were promised last year, have now been implemented and complete the program’s functionality. (avast! Mobile Security) is a very comprehensive security product with a wide range of configuration options.

AV-Comparatives is an independent not-for-profit organization offering systematic security tests of antivirus products for PC and Mac, as well as mobile security solutions. The test conducted in July and August 2014 reviewed the performance of eight security software for OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

We found Avast’s phishing and malware alerts to be very good. The pop-up messages make it clear that the threat has been blocked and provide useful information for advanced users, such as the URL or file path (…) avast! Free Antivirus for Mac identified 100% of samples in both Mac malware and Windows malware tests and has a largely very straightforward program interface, albeit with the odd quirk.  ~ AV-Comparatives said in its report

Panda Security achieves the highest detection ratios in the industry’s leading tests

Panda Cloud Antivirus, the free cloud antivirus from Panda Security, offers the highest levels of protection according to the two leading industry product tests, those of AV-Comparatives and AV-TEST.

AV-Comparatives confirms a 99.9% detection ratio

During the more than 150,000 ‘real world’ proactive detection tests carried out from March to June this year by the AV-Comparatives independent laboratory, Panda Security’s free anti-malware solution managed to detect and block 99.9% of threats.

This comparative test of over 20 antivirus solutions highlights the great protection capacity of Panda Security’s solution, beating out other free products such as Avast, AVG or Microsoft’s antivirus; or pay solutions including Kaspersky, McAfee and Sophos.

Similarly, in the ‘Real-World Protection’ test carried out by AV-TEST in May and June, Panda Cloud Antivirus also racked up the maximum score, with a 100% detection ratio for the second consecutive month. Out of 23 products tested by the laboratory, only three achieved the maximum detection rate, and one of these was Panda Cloud Antivirus, the free solution from Panda Security.

In addition to these excellent detection results, it’s important to note that Panda Security has scored maximum points in the AV-TEST ‘Monthly Consumer Product Testing’ performance test in June.

New XMT Smart Engineering engine

The results from both these labs are based on tests carried out on products based on the new XMT (Extreme Malware Terminator) Smart Engineering engine from Panda Security. With XMT, different technologies interact with each other to achieve new levels of efficiency and greater detection and disinfection power to eradicate all threats. The new XMT engine will be included in the new 2015 consumer product line that Panda Security will be presenting in August.

“The best thing is that the platform and engine with which we’re achieving these results are the basis of all our endpoint protection products. Our aim is to continue integrating technologies in the platform to stay in pole position when it comes to detection and provide our users with maximum protection and minimum impact on their systems”, says Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs at Panda Security.

Panda Security presented Panda Cloud Antivirus version 3.0 last May, after a trial phase during which the product was downloaded more than 30,000 times across 130 countries. The new solution includes, in both the ‘Free’ and ‘Pro’ editions a new more modern and intuitive ‘look and feel’. The solution also delivers improved protection technologies against new threats and attacks that exploit software vulnerabilities and automatically vaccinates USB drives, a feature which is now available to all users of the product, and not just the Pro version, as in the past.

It also includes the highly useful Rescue Kit for dealing with emergencies caused by malware, as well as a more complete process monitor.
