Avira Threats Landscape: Visualizing threats for you

Every day, thousands of different malicious programs are trying to infect as many devices as possible. The goal is the same for all of them: Get your data and if possible your money as well.

We have always been the firsts to learn about the threats that loom over every owner of a PC, Mac, tablet, or smartphone, but us having all the insights is not enough. While studying threats, keeping an eye on where they appear, and adapting our programs accordingly makes sure we keep our users as safe as possible, it’s still complicated to explain to the rest of the world why being protected is that important.

Sure, one reads about the newest threats, but only other people are affected by them, right? Especially big companies or governmental institutions seem to be the targets, so why bother at all. And that is where people are wrong. While the media most often talks about high profile cases, everyone else is at risk just as well! Every day there are millions of threats which have only one goal, namely to infect your devices. Be it your smartphone, laptop, Mac or PC – each and every one of them is at risk. Just think about the latest iOS and OS X exploits or the different ways cybercriminals try to gain control over what’s on your computer.

Check out the Avira Threats Landscape to find out where danger is lurking. #cybersecurity

In order to make our point we decided to share our insights with you in form of an interactive map. Our Avira Threats Landscape allows you to not only see which countries are the top targeted ones but also which threats are popping up the most and how many threats were detected in your country. Take a look at it, you won’t regret it. And when you see just how far reaching and widespread those threats are, make sure to warn your family and friends as well.  The most important thing though: Stay protected!

Give your PC some superpowers

So now that I got this out of the way, here are two important observations by Captain Obvious:

#1: This blog post is about shameless self-promotion.

#2: You’ll be safer (and perhaps mildly amused) after having read it.

So here’s the newsflash: we’ve just launched a superhero campaign that’ll unleash your PC’s superpowers: www.avira.com/en/try-superpowers

The campaign offers our free Antivirus software, as well as free trials to premium software. Take a look at the short descriptions for your PC’s new superpowers:

STRENGTH

Wield superior PC protection, forged deep within the A.V.I.R.A. labs. The process of forging summons otherworldly code, to withstand attacks from any breed of alien forces

SPEED

Be one with an accurate, effective weapon – able to navigate and propel you with supersonic speed through cyberspace. Your PC will be faster, your boot up time—shorter, your streaming—smoother, your PC—cleaner and you’ll even free up space on your hard drive.

STABILITY

Control and stabilize your PC’s elements, with a driver updater tool that’s forged from the remnants of a star. Your hardware will run smoother, your gaming will be faster and it will help prevent system freezes and crashes.

And of course, the page gives you the option at the bottom to share it with your friends and family – just in case you don’t begrudge them your new-found superpowers….

#SECURITHON: Avira’s first hackathon

At Avira, we believe there is at least one thing multiplying faster than digital threats and that is…good ideas. Considering every day we are discovering more and more about the first ones, we wanted to also give you a chance to share with us your ideas on how we can turn the digital world into a better place.

It is our pleasure to invite you to Securithon, our very first hackathon. The event will take place one month from now, in Bucharest, and it aims at finding ingenious ways of solving ‘dirty software bundles’.  We are inviting skilled and passionate developers to write apps that work against unwanted applications from software bundles.

Who

You are a Computer Science student in your final year or a developer already turning good ideas into code and you’re looking for a cool challenge to prove your skills.

When & Where

27-28 June 2015

Connect Hub (Bucharest, Romania)

Why

Installer bundles often package more components than expected: some of them may install silently, others may come as opt-outs…either way, they represent a serious digital threat for all of us.

Together, we want to find other ways for users to avoid installing these additional components, send them useful notifications and make it easier to totally get rid of any kind of PUAs.

Also, we have prepared special prizes for the first three places and of course coffee and pizza are on us during the whole 24 Hours!

You’ll be working in teams of up to 4 members so prepare to share all the fun.

How

Registrations are on Eventbrite and the number of places is limited. Make sure to reserve your seat as soon as possible.

How we celebrated Star Wars Day

May the 4th be with you!

It might come as no surprise that some of the Avira team members are proud to be part of the beautiful community of Star Wars fans. It thus proved to be an absolute pleasure putting together a plan on how we can celebrate Star Wars Day with our users. Since fighting the bad side of the Internet is kind of what we’re really great at, we wanted to see how many of our users would choose light over darkness in a really fun campaign.

It all started last week with a teaser page that allowed people to do the countdown with us before releasing the official campaign page.

Light vs. Darkness: who won?

We offered users the possibility to choose a side: buy an Avira Internet Security Suite license and get a FREE one for a friend (the light side) or buy the same product and benefit from an extra year of protection for FREE, just for them (the dark side).

Star Wars Day campaign

75% of the Avira users chose the dark side in the Star Wars Day Campaign while only 25% turned to the light side.

What we won? Lovely hours spent in cool brainstorming sessions, some one on one training for our colleagues who couldn’t tell the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek and a bunch of new users who will be protected against all the dark forces of the Internet thanks to the Avira Internet Security Suite.

Over 20.000 people visited our Campaign page and we would also like to thank them for the support shown on social media. We were excited to discover the amazing feedback coming from our friends and followers on all social media networks.

Avira Team Gears Up

The Avira Fitness Studio

Logo Avira GymA few months ago we decided to equip our offices in Tettnang with fitness facilities for employees who want to do some sports just before or after work hours. For those wishing to continue their sport routine during the weekend, the Studio’s doors are open 24/7. The Fitness Studio comes as a perfect service to offer our employees together with the in-house catering service and the (already famous) coffee place, our dear Chocavira.

We have acquired modern equipment and tried to organize the space by type of activities so that people can enjoy a professional workout environment. Personal trainers are also available at specific times, making sure that people are making the best out of their fitness sessions. Other logistics have also been taken care of: showers, personal lockers and towels being at our employees’ disposal.

On the Activities menu:

  • Traditional Workout
  • Yoga
  • Spinal + Stretch Workout
  • Pilates
  • Functional Circuit
  • Cycling

Besides being a great place to engage in physical activities, our two months old Fitness Studio has proven to be also a social catalyzer for our employees. It’s fun to see that colleagues of yours share your passion for cycling or yoga and join you for the classes that are being organized on a weekly basis.

In the past couple of months, not only have we come to realize that the Avira gym is an amazing boost for employees’ health and well-being, there are in fact a lot of benefits to be discovered once a company decides to build a workout space for the employees.

What’s the best thing that happened with the Avira Fitness Studio opening in our Tettnang HQ? We simply made our employees happy. How? By showing them their voice matters and we actually do our best to make their wishes come true and transform the work place into a friendly environment. Happy employees contribute to an overall happy atmosphere in the office so we can issue an official warning:

Watch out, viruses! We’ll be coming a lot stronger at you!

The Avira experience @ CeBIT

The week’s highlights: Moscow calling

3,300 exhibitors from 70 different nations did their best at offering visitors useful information and unique experiences related to their products: all digital, all shiny and new…pure joy and innovation.

If you ask us, robots were the keyword of this CeBIT edition. Walking around, there was always a robot right around the corner either imitating the human language or just transporting umbrellas to the ceiling and back. Sweet and scary.

Ed Snowden’s presentation was also one of the most expected moments by the crowd gathered in the Global Conferences Space. During a video call from Moscow, Snowden answered some questions but also tried to give away some of his future plans. To use his own words: “I think that something has gone incredibly wrong. So I did what I did. And I would do it again!”

If you want to get a better feel for what happened this year at CeBIT, there’s a whole collection of videos on the official site of the event.

The Avira Stand

CeBIT 2015Members of the Avira Team were permanently present at the D40 stand in Hall 7, in the space dedicated to Public Sector entities. It was great to have our stand under the Hessen region umbrella, one of our long term partners in Germany. Our presence at the stand allowed us to get in touch not only with potential customers but also with current and future partners. Needless to say that we are always glad to interact with the people we create software for. We’ll also try to bring even more Avira umbrellas with us next year; they seem to be unbelievably popular among our German friends.

“Schutzpaket” officially released

CeBIT SchutzpaketFor us, one of the event’s highlights was represented by the release of the “Schutzpaket” by Deutsche Telekom. In case you haven’t already heard about it, Deutsche Telekom will start offering a free security package with Software made in Germany. You may find in the Schutzpaket not only our antivirus but also the Avira Browser Safety solution. It is both an honor and a great responsbility to be part of such an important initiative.

Looking forward to the next edition of CeBIT, hope to see you there!

Avira In Free Security Package By Deutsche Telekom

At CeBIT in Hanover, T-Systems CEO Reinhard Clemens said: “Customers are often unsure when it comes to security software. Since the Snowden revelations, they are also anxious and asking for a ‘made in Germany’ protection solution. Deutsche Telekom wants to make it easy for as many people as possible to secure their smartphones and computers. That is why we are expanding our existing offering to include an easy-to-install package version from Germany.”

Our very own Avira Antivirus will take care of the security part of said package and protect your Windows PCs and Macs, smartphones and tablets with the iOS and Android operating systems, and servers and networks against malware, using an integrated real-time scanner. Thanks to its cloud-based scanning Avira Antivirus achieves unparalleled security and lightning fast performance. Of course it also reliably scans your downloads, folders, and hard disks.

“Avira Browser Safety” will be included in the package as well. The browser extension protects personal information when surfing the internet and blocks malicious websites as well as tracking by advertising networks, so that they can no longer track what a user is searching for or purchasing online.

The free offering is available to download with the market launch in the second quarter this year at www.telekom.de/schutzpaket. A premium version of the offering with additional functions is planned.

Avira Launches Android Optimizer

Our team is excited to announce the release of Android Optimizer, a FREE mobile version of our PC optimization tool you already know called System Speedup. The app dramatically enhances your smartphone’s speed and performance in three easy steps: Analyze – Clean – Optimize. Our new app can be used not only to remove junk files but also to identify all previously installed apps threatening to slow down the device.

Android Optimizer excels at boosting the overall performance of smartphones and tablets through a powerful set of key features. You can access the app to safely remove sensitive data from the device, delete browsing and calls history and, consequently, improve the stamina of the battery. Another important advantage for Android users is that they will be able to benefit from more space for photos, videos and other apps.

Key Features

  • One Tap Boost: automatically cleans up junk files and frees up memory, without any data loss.
  • Memory Optimizer: shows a list of all active processes, their memory footprint, and enables the user to terminate the unwanted ones.
  • Application Manager: lists all current installed apps, their storage footprint, and enables the user to uninstall the unwanted ones.
  • Junk Cleaner: scans for and lists potentially useless files that fill up the storage on the device, including caches, duplicate files, large files and APK files (Android app kits).
  • Privacy Cleaner: Empowers the user to wipe sensitive data off their phones (browser history, call logs, clipboard data, Facebook cache, messenger cache, WhatsApp cache,…)

“Smartphones are the new feature phones if we look at the sales volume of these devices. Unfortunately, one year later to the purchase, Android devices tend to be technically obsolete. We decided to jump in and fix this problem, by making it easier for users to understand the background actions of their apps and empower them to optimize their devices with one tap”, said Andrei Petrus, Product Manager of Avira.

“We put together all the key features required to make any Android device feel as good as new.

This comes on top of the best-in-class antivirus protection that our Mobile Security solution offers to the world”.
